French and English Explorers of America

3. By Mary Lynn Bushong

11.  Americans wanted more land for farms and towns. In 1803,
France offered to sell their land to America. This meant that Americans had much more land to use.

5. Long ago, natives explored America. Then more people came and explored the country, too.  Those people did not treat Native Americans well. Together, they helped make the place Americans call home.

1. In 1607, Jamestown was begun in Virginia. The British liked to send families with the men. They were happier, and the colonies grew faster. Soon even more people wanted to move to America.

10.  Sir Walter Raleigh explored the coast near North Carolina in 1584. He tried to start a colony at Roanoke some years later, but it was lost. No one knows what happened to the people. When the ship came to check on them, they were all gone.

4. The next year, Lewis and Clark went to explore the new land. They came back three years later with maps and a lot of needed facts about the land out west. In 1838, explorer John Fremont joined up with Kit Carson. They also explored the West. Stories about them were printed. These stories made the West seem very exciting.

2. The Spanish were the first to start exploring the New World. Soon France and Britain joined in. They all wanted to find a quick way to China. The race was on to find the best trade route!

8.   Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River for France in 1534. It was a few years before the British were busy again. In 1576, Martin Frobisher looked for a way to China over the top of Canada. The next year, Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world.

 13.  The French did not send an explorer until 1524. Verrazano explored the east coast of America. He claimed the same land Britain had claimed more than 25 years earlier. He also looked for a water route to China.

14.French and English Explorers of America

12.    First, the British sent John Cabot. He made his first trip in 1497. He did not find a way to China, but he did find the coast of Canada.

9.  In 1603, the Frenchman Samuel de Champlain began exploring the Great Lakes. Two years later, a colony was finally begun at Port Royal in Nova Scotia, Canada. Many French colonists did not have families living there. It was mostly just men who hoped to go back to France in a few years.

 7.  Though explorers went to America, very few colonies were started at first. Britain and France hoped to control new trade routes to China. Other countries would pay to use those routes. Colonies were not important at first. They had too many troubles to take care of at home.

6. In 1682, a man named LaSalle sailed up the Mississippi River. He claimed all the land there for France. That meant that the British could only use the land along the coast. British and French forces began to fight. The natives helped the French. In 1754, the French and Indian War started. The British and Americans won this war. When America wanted to be a free country in 1776, there was another war. They fought against the British and won.

CALIFORNIA MISSIONS & NATIVE AMERICANS

CALIFORNIA MISSIONS & NATIVE AMERICANS

Spain thought the best way to start a colony in Californa was by setting up missions.

Gasper de Portola, a Spanish army captain, and Father Junipero Serra, a Catholic priest, set out for California. On July 16, 1769

,  ___Alta California at San Diego.

Eventually, over the years, the _missions_ would be approximately a day's walk from one another. The missions' sites were chosen in valleys, near fresh water, rich soil, and near friendly __Native__  Americans.

After claiming the land for Spain, the priests focused on teaching the Indians about Christianity and the Spanish culture. They also showed the Indians techniques of building with adobe bricks, carpentry, blacksmithing, working in the fields, and tending the animals. Work at the missions was very __hard_ for the Indians. They had to follow all of the rules set up by the __priests___________ and work day and __night________.  If the Indians broke any rules or tried to return to their tribes, they were punished.
